If you’ve been in the treatment room long enough, you’ve probably had that heart-stopping moment when a client mentions she used retinol the night before her wax. We’ve all been there. After nearly three decades in esthetics and more than twenty years of training professionals with Eminence Organic Skin Care, I’ve seen how much smoother a service goes when both the client and the esthetician are fully prepared. Here’s what I’ve learned to help estheticians prevent irritation and keep every waxing service effective and stress-free.
Clients sometimes arrive with skin that’s already compromised, maybe they’ve over-exfoliated, spent too much time in the sun or recently used retinol. As a result, I ask clients to avoid the following a few days before their appointment:
I recommend setting up two automated emails to make pre-wax communication effortless and consistent. The first email should send right after a client books their appointment. Use it to confirm the time and share important preparation guidelines, especially products or medications that require more lead time to stop using, such as retinoids or Accutane. This early notice gives clients enough time to adjust their skincare routine safely.
The second email should go out a few days before the appointment. It saves time and reinforces the same key points every client needs to know. Include reminders like:
In the days leading up to the service, I suggest switching to a gentle, non-active cleanser and moisturizer. Calm, balanced skin is easier to wax and far less likely to react.
Attach your digital waiver or pre-care form to this reminder email so clients can review it and confirm they’ve read it. This adds professionalism and helps everyone arrive prepared. A pre-care waiver or digital form sets expectations and protects your business. It’s a professional way to remind clients why avoiding certain products (especially retinol) is essential for safe results.
Post-wax care is where your expertise really shows. Once the wax is done the skin is more vulnerable to irritation, inflammation and breakouts, so the next 24 hours are all about protection and recovery. Giving clear instructions and pointing people in the direction of gentle products makes all the difference.
Here’s what I recommend for clients right after their service:
From the Eminence Organics range, I always reach for Stone Crop Hydrating Mist immediately after waxing. This refreshing botanical mist is enriched with stone crop and aloe to hydrate and comfort the skin’s surface. Stone crop helps to restore balance and minimize the appearance of redness, leaving freshly waxed skin feeling soothed, cool and revitalized. I'd also recommend the Advanced Care Collection as it offers targeted support during the recovery phase. The Ceramide Repair Balm helps soothe the appearance of dry, sensitized skin with a skin-supporting ceramide complex, allantoin and calendula extract. The Copper Tripeptide Serum also helps support the appearance of skin recovery with zinc hyaluronate and resveratrol. The collection also features additional professional solutions including the Squalane Pro Multi-Oil and Tetrapeptide Lifting Gel for a range of treatment applications.
For daily protection, I finish with Sun Defense Minerals SPF. This lightweight mineral powder offers broad-spectrum sun protection with natural zinc oxide while helping to even out skin tone. It’s gentle enough for freshly waxed or sensitive skin and gives clients a smooth, natural finish that helps keep their complexion protected and calm throughout the day.
The estheticians who stand out are the ones who blend great technique with genuine connection. When you take the time to educate, reassure and follow up, clients notice.
