Every day, you face environmental stress that clogs your pores, causes inflammation and accelerates the aging process. With these challenges comes the need for new professional treatments that detoxify, protect and repair the skin. Read on for our guide to why detox facials are a must and how to perform one.
Why Your Clients Need A Skin Detox
Modern living exposes you to UV damage, pollution and blue light radiation - all of which wreak havoc on healthy skin. Under normal circumstances, the lymphatic system can efficiently clear out waste and toxins, helping to keep the damage under control. However, as Eminence Organics International Trainer Brian Goodwin explains: “Our lifestyles tend to block the lymphatic system from doing its job because of the stagnant nature of our lives.” As a result, waste and toxins build up and cause plenty of problems that present as acne, inflammation and the visible signs of aging.
A detox facial helps to remove impurities, pollutants and dead skin cells to revitalize the skin and support its health.
What to do? Book a detox facial. Eminence Organics Product Support Team Lead Alicia Hawthorne describes the benefits of a detoxifying treatment: “It allows the skin a fresh start. Detox stimulates a healthier environment for the skin and can encourage increased production of collagen and elastin. These changes can help increase cell turnover and improve the skin barrier overall.” A detox facial helps to remove impurities, pollutants and dead skin cells to revitalize the skin and support its health.
Ingredients To Detox The Skin
There are several ingredients to look for when selecting professional skin care for a detox facial. Here are five we recommend for their powerful detoxifying properties.
One skin care ingredient that is getting plenty of buzz (and for good reason) is mushroom. Mushrooms are adaptogens - a type of plant that helps the body adapt to changes and restore balance. Reishi mushroom is one of the most famous. With more than 400 bio-active compounds, this mushroom has powerful regenerative, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for the body and skin.
Another favorite is microgreens. These miniature plants, which include broccoli, radish and clover sprouts, harbor four to six times more nutrients than more mature plant varieties. They are brimming with vitamins and minerals that boost skin - and body - health. As USDA researcher Dr. Gene Lester explains: “All of these nutrients are extremely important for skin, eyes and fighting cancer and have all sorts of benefits associated with them.”
Birch trees contain this powerhouse sap packed with electrolytes, flavonoids, amino acids, proteins, enzymes and vitamins. Eminence Organics Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar calls it “nature’s sports drink” for its ability to replenish the skin and optimize its health. Consumed as a beverage in northern Europe and China for centuries, birch water can now be found in skin care products due to its powerful hydrating and antioxidant properties.
Vitamin C is well-known for its countless skin care benefits. This potent antioxidant is essential for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues - including the skin. Natalie tells us: “Vitamin C is an incredibly effective nutrient for your body and an all-around savior for skin care. It’s been found to help prevent UV damage, reduce pigmentation, reduce inflammation and boost collagen production in skin.” Since the body cannot produce it on its own, one of the best ways to deliver Vitamin C benefits is through topical skin care.
Clay is another skin care ingredient that has powerful detoxifying properties. Eminence Organics International Trainer Jude Herrera says: “Clays help to detoxify the skin and draw out impurities and oil from its surface.” You can think of clay like a magnet: Its negatively charged particles attract positively charged impurities such as toxins and bacteria and pull them from pores. For clients who are struggling with oily or acne-prone skin, this ingredient can work wonders to clear impurities from their complexions.
Professional Detox Facial
Ready to get started? Follow this professional protocol to perform a detox facial with your favorite Eminence Organics products.
1. Double Cleanse
The Stone Crop Cleansing Oil includes our Detoxifying Microgreens Complex, a blend of microgreens that protects skin from the drying effects of environmental stressors.
This moisturizing facial mist is infused with stone crop, an ingredient that has been used in folk medicine for centuries for its anti-inflammatory properties. Stone crop leaves and juice were traditionally applied as a poultice to remedy red and itchy dry skin.
Prep the skin to better absorb subsequent treatments with the Birch Water Purifying Essence.
This lightweight essence acts as a primer to help other leave-on treatments work better. It includes antioxidant-rich birch water and reishi mushroom to eliminate impurities, rejuvenate the skin and reduce the appearance of puffiness.
Apply the Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant™ with a few drops of water. Gently massage into skin, carefully avoiding the delicate eye area. Remove with a warm wet towel and pat skin dry.
With its light fizzing action, this revitalizing formula gently invigorates the skin and removes impurities to reveal a brighter-looking complexion. Our suggestion: Use as a pre-extraction softening treatment or as a degreasing step to enhance the results of a peel.
Perform extractions as needed (avoid if your client has sunburned skin).
This de-puffing mask includes snow mushroom, reishi mushroom, birch water and clay to remove impurities, give skin a tighter appearance and minimize the drying effects of pollution. With its creamy consistency, it has just the right amount of slip for massage.
7. Facial Massage
Continue facial massage with lymphatic drainage. Mix the Rosehip & Lemongrass Soothing Hydrator with a few drops of the Facial Recovery Oil. Emulsify, apply and massage for 5–7 minutes. Gently remove excess with a warm wet towel.
This gentle massage technique encourages the movement of lymph fluids to help drain toxins and remove excess waste.
Apply the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum.
This serum is packed with Vitamin C to provide antioxidant benefits which help with the appearance of aging. The addition of Vitamin E and ferulic acid amplifies its power eight-fold.
Apply the Lotus Detoxifying Overnight Treatment and leave on. For extra moisture, layer with a few drops of the Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil. Follow with the Lilikoi Mineral Defense Moisturizer SPF 40.
The Lilikoi Mineral Defense Moisturizer provides SPF plus protection against the drying effects of environmental stressors. Lilikoi (passion fruit) seed oil, satsuma mandarin peel extract and larch tree help protect skin against drying pollutants and help with the visible signs of aging.
10. Eye Care
Apply a thin layer of the Snow Mushroom Moisture Cloud Eye Cream to the eye area using light blending motions until absorbed. Leave on.
This luxuriously fluffy eye cream contains snow mushroom, reishi mushroom and birch water to purify and hydrate the eye area. Botanical peptides from quinoa seed help to smooth roughness and reduce the appearance of under eye bags and puffiness.
