Vitamin C is one of the ingredients I’m asked about most often as an esthetician and educator. Clients want to know if a higher percentage is better, whether vitamin C will be too much for sensitive skin or if it should only be used at night. I understand the confusion. Vitamin C is powerful, but it's also one of the most misunderstood ingredients in skin care.
The truth is that vitamin C is not just about strength. The type of vitamin C, the formula it is in and how it is used in a client’s routine all matter. Below, I’m breaking down some of the most common vitamin C myths I hear and what professionals should know before recommending vitamin C to a client.
I often hear clients ask for the strongest vitamin C product, and I understand why. A percentage can feel like an easy way to compare products. But a higher percentage doesn't automatically mean better results. Stability, formulation and ingredient compatibility all play a role in how well a product performs. A thoughtfully formulated vitamin C product can deliver better visible brightening and firming benefits without relying on an exceptionally high percentage.
Brightening may be vitamin C's claim to fame, but it's not the only reason to use it. While vitamin C is well known for helping improve the look of dark spots and uneven skin tone, it can also help address concerns like fine lines and loss of firmness. Plus, its antioxidant properties help skin contend with the environmental stressors it encounters every day. This is why we love it for every age, as prevention is always the best approach.
Another myth I hear is that vitamin C makes skin more sensitive to the sun. In reality, vitamin C can complement a daytime routine, especially when layered under sunscreen. For clients using vitamin C in the morning, they should apply it after cleansing and toning, then follow with moisturizer and SPF.
Depending on the client’s skin type, tolerance and routine, vitamin C can also be used at night. What matters most is choosing a formula that suits the skin’s needs and building a consistent, personalized approach.
Many clients with sensitive or breakout-prone skin assume vitamin C will be too active for their skin and avoid it altogether.
In reality, vitamin C is not a one-size-fits-all ingredient. Different forms of vitamin C and different formulations can vary significantly in how they perform on the skin.
That's why I encourage skin care professionals not to dismiss vitamin C based on a client's experience with a single product. Instead, focus on identifying a formula that aligns with the client's skin type, concerns and goals. I also think it is important to ensure there are no potentially incompatible products being used.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that if a product contains vitamin C, it will perform the same way as every other vitamin C formula. In reality, the type of vitamin C, the stability of the formula and the ingredients it's paired with can all influence the overall experience and visible results.
That's why professionals should look beyond the ingredient name on the label. Two vitamin C products may both contain vitamin C, but they may be designed to address different concerns, fit into different routines or deliver benefits in different ways. Evaluating the formula as a whole helps ensure you're making recommendations based on skin needs rather than ingredient trends alone.

When chosen thoughtfully, vitamin C can be a beautiful addition to a professional skin care routine, especially for anyone looking to support brighter, firmer and more even-looking skin.
Is a higher vitamin C percentage always better?
No. Visible results depend on several factors, including the stability of the vitamin C, the formulation and how well the ingredient is delivered to the skin.
Can sensitive skin use vitamin C?
Many people with sensitive skin can use vitamin C when they choose a formula designed for their skin type and concerns.
Can vitamin C replace sunscreen?
No. Vitamin C and SPF play different roles in a skin care routine. Vitamin C provides antioxidant benefits, while sunscreen helps protect skin from UV exposure.
Are all vitamin C products the same?
No, different vitamin C products use different forms, concentrations and supporting ingredients, which can affect the overall experience and visible benefits.
