7 Earth Day Eco-Friendly Tips for Spas
Why should your spa go green? People are passionate about supporting eco-friendly businesses — plus, the planet will thank you!
As you may know, at Eminence Organic Skin Care, we’re committed to finding organic, earth-friendly solutions in every aspect of our business. One of our eco-friendly cornerstone efforts is our Forests for the Future™ initiative, where we, in partnership with Trees for the Future, plant a tree for every retail product sold. And just in time for Earth Month, Eminence Organics is celebrating a momentous achievement, becoming the first and only skin care company to have planted 20 million trees!
This has helped restore over 20,000 acres of land and impacted the lives of thousands of families in developing countries. For those actively seeking ways to be more sustainable and reduce their environmental impact, here are some ways you can make your spa greener and reduce its carbon footprint.
7 Sustainability Tips For Spas
1. Conserve Power
Turning off electrical equipment and lights wherever possible not only conserves the planet but can even help your business reduce operating costs. Using halogen, LED, CLF or low-voltage track lighting in at least 50% of your sources can also help make your spa more eco-friendly. For added convenience, you can also put your lights on a timer or motion sensor so they turn off when there is no one inside the room.
As a Certified B Corporation® Eminence Organics uses wind power credits and solar panels to offset electricity usage at our offices. You too can consider using wind and solar power for a greener source of energy at your business.
Sometimes it’s the little things that help like programming all computer monitors to go to sleep mode after 15 minutes or more of not being used. Another way to use less energy is to adjust the A/C up by two degrees in the summer and turn your thermostat down two degrees in the winter. This small change will also save you money on your energy bills.
2. Establish A Recycling Program
Establish an in-spa recycling awareness program and place recycling bins in common areas next to trash cans. Ensure there are clearly marked signs indicating what constitutes acceptable waste, such as glass/plastic, paper and trash, to encourage this eco-friendly practice. In addition, encourage that all paper used in the office is recycled. You can reuse paper for in-spa memos, notes and scratch paper.
3. Raise Awareness
You can designate time at staff meetings to discuss new and existing environmental efforts. Raise awareness by communicating your efforts in the marketing content sent to your clientele. In a similar vein, you can also expand eco-consciousness beyond the spa by providing staff with information on how they can improve their green efforts at home too.
4. Use Biodegradable Options
Instead of plastic cups, plates and flatware, use reusable or biodegradable options whenever possible with your food and beverage services. Consider adopting natural, non-toxic, biodegradable cleaning supplies instead of chemical-based products. Clients appreciate natural products and eco-friendly practices.
You can also print all marketing materials on recycled paper with eco-friendly inks. For example, at Eminence Organics’ offices, we use letterhead printed on post-consumer recycled paper using eco-friendly inks.
5. Limit Linens for Guests
Limit the amount of linens provided to guests. Offer only what they may need with the option of additional linens upon request. This would include towels and robes.
6. Save In The Kitchen
When it comes to stocking your office kitchen, consider buying organic and Fair Trade coffee. Fair Trade certified coffee directly supports a better life for farming families in the developing world. To receive a Fair Trade Certification, the company must adhere to regulated standards such as paying workers a fair wage, adopting ethical business practices and adopting strategies for environmental sustainability on the property.
You can also save in the long term by purchasing all condiments and supplies (cream, sugar, paper goods and hand soaps) in bulk - a wise financial choice that reduces waste over time. Also consider using filtered water taps instead of buying bottles of drinking water. This is a cheaper alternative to buying bottled water and limits plastic waste.
7. Use Organic Products
Does your spa use earth-friendly or organic products, soaps, treatments and cosmetics? Since Eminence Organics’ inception in 1958, the company has been using sustainable farming and green practices to create natural, organic and Biodynamic® products. From your massage oils through to your bathroom soaps, think about using organic products.
We hope you enjoyed these sustainability tips if you’re interested in conducting business in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner. It may seem overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to implement all these eco-friendly ideas at once. Small and simple switches can have a big impact.
