Daring stories. Dazzling sets. Impeccable costumes, hair and makeup. The Oscars, despite a difficult year, are back to celebrate the best in cinema. The 93rd Academy Awards not only recognizes talented actors. It is also a ceremony honoring artistic and technical professions. Makeup, hairstyling and fashion are under spotlight scrutiny as the world tunes into the event to see the latest in fashion and beauty trends.
And when it comes to skin care, the trend is to possess a glowing, healthy complexion. That’s why Eminence Organic Skin Care was thrilled to supply products to the set of Hillbilly Elegy, a movie that is nominated for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for 2021. Directed by Ron Howard, the film includes Oscar-nominated actresses Glenn Close and Amy Adams, as well as Freida Pinto, who was already a huge Eminence Organics fan! Hillbilly Elegy: Makeup & Hairstyling
Back in May 2019, when the movie was filming, Eminence Organics received an email from Jamie Hess, one of the makeup artists working with Eryn Krueger Mekash, the film’s makeup department head. Jamie mentioned that “between the glue, prosthetic removers and the weather, keeping everyone’s skin in tip top shape [was] of utmost importance,” explaining that she recently discovered Eminence Organics and was “absolutely in love with it!” After providing some information about the stars’ skin types and concerns, the Eminence Organics team created custom regimens for each star to send to the set.
"Proper skin prep is invaluable for a good make up application," Jamie told Eminence Organics. "Since discovering Eminence Organics skincare, I have seen the benefits of these products both personally and professionally and how they can transform the skin. They will remain a staple in my personal and professional make up kit."
Based on the best-selling memoir of the same name, Hillbilly Elegy follows J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso) as he comes of age in an impoverished Ohio town. J.D.’s mom (Amy Adams) falls into a drug-addiction spiral, leaving him in his grandmother's care. Freida Pinto rounds out the ensemble of the Netflix adaptation as the Yale Law School student who dates Vance.
Thanks to the talents of Jamie, Eryn, Patricia Dehaney (hair department head) and Matthew Mungle (prosthetic designer), the Fatal Attraction star Glenn is unrecognizable as the family matriarch, Mamaw. Her transformation involved a prosthetic stomach, low-rise jeans, boxy Reebok sneakers, oversize glasses and frizzy dark hair. Similarly, Amy is completely transformed into her character with the help of a team comprising hairstyling, wardrobe and makeup.
As Eryn describes in her article published on the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild blog: “I orchestrated a very precise application and timing with Jamie so that our actors wouldn’t be waiting long for the others to be ready. Glenn’s application started in wig prep with Patti, then she came to us. Jamie applied the right ear and I applied the left. While Jamie painted Glenn’s hands, I started to apply the nose. As soon as I got the nose glued down, Amy would come in for wig prep with Patti.”
When it came time to the transformations on set, makeup artists added a silicone nose and gelatin ears to Glenn’s face as well as age spots, blotchiness, freckles and veins. Despite the less than glamorous transformation, the cast and their complexions were kept healthy with Eminence Organics products. Needless to say, we will be tuning in to see the results of the Oscar winners on Sunday, April 25!
