Our Experts Reveal Their Top 10 Tips For Skin Care
Beautiful skin isn’t hard to come by, but it does require some basic know-how. Who better to ask than our inhouse experts on how to take care of your best asset? Eminence Organics Product Support Team Lead Alicia Hawthorne and Alana Henrikson bring a combined 29 years of esthetics experience, and they’ve distilled their knowledge into an unwavering set of skin care commandments. Here are their top 10 skin care tips that they follow, without fail.
1. Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse
Cleanliness is not just next to godliness but to divine-looking skin too. The first law in skin care is to remove your makeup every night before you go to bed. It’ll prevent breakouts and premature signs of aging.
2. Defense is your best offense
Turn this sports mantra into your skin care one and protect your skin from the sun. Even though sun damage doesn’t show itself right away, it will later, so if you are shielding yourself from too much UV, you’ll be ahead of the game. Even on cloudy days, make sure you go out wearing sunscreen or a double-duty moisturizer with SPF, like our Lilikoi Mineral Defense Moisturizer SPF 40.
3. Once-a-month check-ups
Every month, you need to put your face in the hands of a pro. A monthly assessment by an esthetician means that if a problem, like clogged pores, is starting to develop, you can get treatment underway before it gets serious.
4. Beware of the DIY facial
It’s cheaper than the spa and funner if you’re doing it with friends, but DIY home treatments can get you into trouble, especially if you have sensitive skin. There’s nothing worse than a botched pore extraction and even the innocent cucumber facial can leave you with red, irritated skin. Our advice? Leave it to the professionals.
5. Your most valuable liquid asset
… is H2O of course. Drink eight glasses of water a day, hydrate your skin and lock in the hydration with moisturizer. And not just your face but all over. At night our skin loses water, so a rich moisturizer with hyaluronic acid - which binds to water - is key to preventing dehydrated skin.
6. Leave your skin alone!
Don’t pick at blemishes. It may be tempting but popping and squeezing your problem skin leads to an inflammatory response. And once the skin is inflamed, it reacts by causing hyperpigmentation spots or by disrupting collagen production - resulting in dark acne spots or depressed acne scars.
7. Get rid of the dead stuff
Exfoliate at least once a week (depending on your skin type). This keeps pores clean which helps shrink pore size.
8. Invest in eye cream
The fragile area around our eyes is aging’s first giveaway. Keep it hydrated with eye cream both morning and night to keep crows feet and deeper lines at bay.
9. The serum factor
Serums and oils can address specific concerns, especially dehydration. A serum that has hyaluronic acid in it will hydrate and help prevent signs of aging. It’s an ingredient we naturally have in our body that helps keep the skin nice and plump, but we start losing it around the age of 25.
10. Be kind, unwind
Be nice to your skin! Your skin is going through lots of changes in life because of environment, stress, hormones and aging. Get lots of sleep, indulge in our recommended home care products and treat yourself to a facial at your nearest Eminence Organics partner spa.
