The Future of Skin Care: Stem Cell Technology
If you’re keeping up with current trends in skin care (or if you’re already an existing user of our Age Corrective Collection) you’ve probably heard about stem cells – a uniquely effective ingredient in skin care. But, how much do you know about them?
WHAT ARE STEM CELLS?
Stem cells are found in all living things, including plants, animals and humans. Think of stem cells as the basic cell from which all other cells are developed. Stem cells are able to develop into many different kinds of cells by dividing and self-renewing to replenish themselves, which is important since they grow and die at a rapid rate (approximately every 40 days).
HOW DO THEY WORK?
However, as we age, stem cells become less active and the body’s replenishment of collagen decreases, resulting in the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging. Enter the magic of stem cell skin technology! When skin care products that contain stem cells are applied topically, they provide valuable antioxidant benefits, and stimulate and activate the body’s own stem cells to start doing their job of firming the skin and maintaining its natural elasticity (Women’s Health).
Stem cell extracts used in skin care products (not the live cells themselves) are mostly sourced from plants and fruits that can stay fresh for a long time (RealSimple). In fact, as we mentioned earlier, at Éminence we use stem cell technology in some of our existing products.
WHAT ARE ARGAN STEM CELLS?
Our Age Corrective Night Collection contains Argan Stem Cell Complex made from nutmeg seed and stem cells from Moroccan argan trees. According to our company President Boldijarre Koronczay, “To be able to survive that long, [the Moroccan argan tree] has developed incredible self-repairing abilities. So [its stem cells] can teach your skin cells to regenerate in the same way.” Argan stem cells encourage the regeneration of dermal stem cells and thus increase skin density. The result? Firmer, younger looking skin.
WHAT ARE SWISS GREEN APPLE STEM CELLS?
Another type of stem cell found within our Age Corrective Collection is the Swiss Green Apple Stem Cell. These plant stem cells are drawn from the Uttwiler Spatlauber apple, packed with proteins and phytonutrients to restore youth to our epidermal cells. By harvesting the longevity of the Swiss Green Apple Stem Cells into skin care, we can combat chronological aging of our skin, and increase elasticity and firmness from the outside in.
