Beard Care: Shaving Tips & Tricks

Men have skin care needs too, so in honor of the bearded (and clean-shaven) men out there, we’re sharing a few of our quick and easy tips on how to get that perfect shave.

For The Clean-Shaven Man

The Shave Prep

The key to a good shave is preventing inflamed, post-shave bumps. One method of avoiding ingrown hairs and raised bumps is proper exfoliation. “Deflake with an exfoliating facial scrub. It will help you get a closer shave while reducing ingrown hairs," suggests Men’s Health Magazine.

Prior to shaving, we suggest using our Red Currant Exfoliating Cleanser (named Best Facial Exfoliator for Men by Harper’s Bazaar). This cleanser and exfoliant combo will help wash and buff away dead skin and unclog pores.

The Shave

Shaving creams don’t necessarily make a good shave. In fact, some shaving creams are filled with unnecessary perfumes and foaming agents which can irritate the skin. Instead, we suggest opting for a cream-based cleanser like our Lemon Cleanser or Stone Crop Gel Wash which are both free of parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, synthetic dyes and petrochemicals. These cleansers have a pleasant herbal scent and contain antioxidant-rich ingredients that help hydrate and nourish the skin while softening the pre-shave stubble.

The After-Shave

Serums are light in consistency but high in concentrated nutrients, so they are the perfect option to help hydrate and protect the look of skin post-shave. Eminence Organics Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum is a great option to deliver optimal antioxidant benefits while firming and plumping skin.

For men who are prone to ingrown hairs: Facial Recovery Oil is your secret weapon. This is another great after-shave treatment that includes a blend of Biodynamic® herbs, as well as the antibacterial properties of tea tree oil to balance the complexion.

For the bearded man

Beards are back, and we know a good beard when we see one. Keeping a beard sleek and well-groomed can sometimes involve just as much maintenance as shaving every day. To keep a beard looking dapper, conditioning care that softens and smooths coarse facial hair - as well as the skin underneath - is essential.

We suggest adding a few drops of our Facial Recovery Oil in the palm and then gently smoothing over the beard for a hydrated and shiny finish. Filled with nourishing and hydrating sage clary and olive oils, it soothes and restores dry skin and facial hair for a silky smooth finish.

The SPF Factor

Beard or no beard, SPF protection is a must every day. After a shave, skin is freshly exfoliated and tends to be even more sensitive to the sun's harmful rays. If you’re looking for an SPF moisturizer with a fresh, masculine-friendly scent, we suggest our Bright Skin Moisturizer with SPF 40. This best selling moisturizer provides broad spectrum UV protection while minimizing the look of dark spots due to sun exposure.
